Researchers have found a strong link between drinking more coffee and a lower risk of dying from colon cancer. This is evident from new Dutch research made possible by the World Cancer Research Fund. The findings give hope for a better chance of survival from colon cancer, with the help of an accessible step: drinking more coffee.
The findings
The new research shows that participants who drank more than 4 cups of coffee per day – compared to participants who drank fewer than 2 cups per day – were 32 percent less likely to have colon cancer return after treatment. In addition, they had a lower risk of dying from colon cancer, with 3 to 5 cups per day proving to be the best way to reduce that risk.
About colon cancer
Every year, approximately 12,000 people in the Netherlands are diagnosed with colon cancer. It is one of the most common types of cancer at home and abroad. It is more common in men than in women.
The number of people living longer after being diagnosed with colon cancer is increasing. In about 20 to 30 percent of these people the disease comes back. It is therefore important to reduce the chance of colon cancer returning.
