Jakarta, CNBC IndonesiaEntering the new year, Indonesia has a new threat. A number of areas are predicted to experience drought in the midst of the current rainy season.

This was conveyed by climatology expert from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Erma Yulihastin on account X (formerly Twitter). He explained that there would be a dominance of easterly monsoon winds which are usually associated with the dry season.

This phenomenon has an impact on the strengthening of El Nino. Drought will especially occur on the island of Java.

“The drought is not over in Java! The easterly monsoon winds which are synonymous with the dry season are dominant over Java again. This further emphasizes that El Nino weakens the westerly monsoon so that the dry season is longer, delays the rainy season, and changes the nature of the rainy season to become drier,” said Erma .

This happened partly because of the intrusion of dry air from the south of Java and Australia which is currently entering summer. This makes Java Island experience hot and dry weather even though it is the rainy season.

The strengthening of El Nino that has occurred since last December is expected to continue until January 2024. The impact is cooling sea surface temperatures and the thermocline in Papua, this will make it difficult for the formation of clouds and rain.

Last year’s El Nino phenomenon pattern occurred in 1997. At that time there was a significant rainfall deficit.

“Then how long will it be this hot and dry? At least during December 2-3, we in Java still have to be patient waiting for rain. Even so, we also have to be prepared for extreme rain that can occur after dry spells. Remember, El Niño is still 5-6 another month until May 2024!” he wrote in a separate tweet.

Previously, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) also warned about El Nino this year. According to the agency’s report, this phenomenon will last until April 2024 or could be longer than before.

Apart from that, WMO reminded that El Nino this time will have a broad impact on tropical regions. At least this will happen until March 2024.

“This disruption is likely to have significant impacts on communities, economic activities, or natural ecosystems in several regions.”
