New Draft Law in Bulgaria Requires Remote Reading Water Meters and Costs at Least BGN 200 per Family Replacement

The replacement will cost at least BGN 200 per family

Within 24 months of the entry into force of the law, all individual water meters in Bulgaria must have remote reading, and all building deviations from the water supply network must have their own measuring device. This was recorded by the regional ministry in a new version of the draft law on water supply and sewage services, which was released for public consultation.

This is the second attempt of the official cabinet to regulate the plumbing sector – in October of this year. a first version of this project was released, but the time was not enough to get it into the parliament. However, there was no such idea in it, which is now written in the transitional and final provisions of the project.

Water meters with a remote control are twice as expensive as regular ones, such as

their average price is over 100 BGN

In the homes with heating, there are two appliances – one for cold and one for hot water.

During the previous public hearing, 33 comments and suggestions were received, including from the President’s Chief Secretary. In the final version, however, most of the comments have not been accepted.

The idea remains that the regulation of water supply operators will be taken over by a new body – the Commission for Water Regulation. It will consist of 5 members,

elected by the parliament for a term of 5 years

They will be eligible for up to two terms. The salary of the chairman of the new regulatory commission will be 93% of the average remuneration in the water sector, which according to the latest data is BGN 1,389. The members will accordingly receive 85% of the average salary for the sector.
