New Documentary ‘Thriller 40’ Pays Tribute to Michael Jackson’s Historic Album

More than four decades after the release of Thriller of Michael Jackson, a new documentary titled Thriller 40 will pay tribute to the historic album, and Billboard presents the trailer below.

Usher, Mary J. Blige, will.i.am, Mark Ronson, Misty Copeland, Maxwell, “Thriller” video director John Landis and more are interviewed for Thriller 40which includes never-before-seen footage behind the making of the classic.

Released on November 30, 1982, Thriller, Jackson’s sixth studio album, placed seven singles in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, including two No. 1s: “Beat It” and “Billie Jean.” In addition to winning eight Grammy Awards, the album has been certified 34 times platinum by the RIAA and sold more than 100 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling album of all time globally.

Thriller 40 debuts December 2 at 8 pm ET on Showtime and will be available on Paramount+ (for Paramount+ With Showtime subscribers). It will also make its international debut on the same day on Paramount+ in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Latin America and South Korea, and on MTV internationally, excluding China and Japan. The film was directed by Nelson George and produced by Optimum Productions and Company Name. Colin Hanks, Sean Stuart and Jackson’s estate co-executors John Branca and John McClain serve as producers.

“There are two things in the music business: before Thriller and after Thriller,” says journalist Steven Ivory at the beginning of the trailer presented below.

The trailer navigates the album’s production process, the music videos, the “Moonwalk” (which Jackson premiered in the special Motown 25 1983) and the eventual world domination of the project and its musical genius.

“It’s the definitive blueprint for modern pop music,” Black Eyed Peas’ will.i.am says in the trailer. “Yeah Thriller came out today, it would still be the best album ever made.”
