- sorae – First time ever!Neptune’s “dark spot” successfully observed from the ground; unexpected “bright spot” also discovered
This was introduced by sorae in an article on September 13, 2023.“Neptune” photographed from the ground in 2019“is. This image of Neptune was taken using the spectroscopic observation instrument “MUSE” installed on the “VLT (Very Large Telescope)” of the Paranal Observatory in the Atacama Desert, Chile.Succeeded in photographing a dark spot for the first time using a ground-based telescopeThis is what I did.
In 2019, a research team led by Irwin attempted to photograph Neptune’s dark spot “NDS-2018” using the spectroscopic observation device “MUSE” installed at the VLT. NDS-2018 is one of the dark spots discovered in 2018 by the Hubble Space Telescope. Although Neptune’s dark spot has been photographed by the Hubble Space Telescope, which orbits at an altitude of approximately 540 km, it has never been photographed by a ground-based telescope.
As a result of the observations, VLT was the first ground-based telescope in the world to successfully photograph Neptune’s dark spot. In addition, we succeeded in obtaining the reflection spectrum of NDS-2018 from detailed observation data for each wavelength. The reflection spectrum, which shows the intensity of each wavelength of reflected light, provides clues to the composition and state of the substances present in dark spots.
