The fact that there is a great deal of interest in the art of Johannes Vermeer in the year of Vermeer became clear with a number of discoveries in his work. But what did Vermeer paint over in his painting Sleeping Girl? That seems to be the answer now.
Researchers of The Met can see through layers of paint using the latest techniques. It shows that there must have been another figure in the transparent space behind the girl. And even more special: it must very likely have been an artist. An easel used to be on the spot where Vermeer painted a window frame. An artist could be seen in front of the easel with a brush in his hand. Vermeer seems to have found the scene too busy and painted over the artist away from space.

The new research allows the figure to finally reappear after hundreds of years. Could it be a self-portrait of Johannes Vermeer? As seen in the last episode of De Nieuwe Vermeer, the only self-portrait went missing.

The oil painting Sleeping Girl was made around 1657. The artwork is not part of the Vermeer exhibition in the Rijksmuseum.
