New Discoveries of Asian Tiger Mosquito in the Canary Islands

Recently, the authorities in the Canary Islands have informed about several discoveries of Aedes albopictus, better known as the Asian tiger mosquito. In January wrote Canariavisen that the health authorities were following the situation closely since mosquitoes can spread Zika (infectious disease), yellow fever and other diseases.

Now the newspaper reports Canary Islands 7 that new discoveries have been made of the “terrible mosquito”.

– In the last week, we have found adult specimens of the mosquito in three traps located in the area near Calle Galilea in Las Palmas, public health director José Díaz-Flores tells the newspaper.

Díaz-Flores adds that the number of mosquitoes has been reduced since they were discovered on November 28. He also informs that no new breeding sites have been found, but that they suspect that the mosquito has hidden in one of the nearly 90 houses that have not yet been inspected.

– We have some problems with gaining access to certain homes, mainly because they are not at home when we arrive, says the director of public health.

Bot-bonanza: – Absurd

According to Tenerife Weekly the health authorities have set up 1,200 traps in the Canary Islands to catch the unwanted mosquito.

– Measures are also being taken to eradicate the mosquito, so that it will not gain a foothold on the archipelago. The Ministry of Health emphasizes in a statement that these viruses are not present in the Canary Islands, and therefore the chance of spread from mosquitoes is minimal anyway, wrote Canariavisen in December.

– Go home!

In recent years, the aforementioned mosquitoes have also spread further north.

– When it gets even warmer here in Norway, the mosquito will probably also be able to survive here, Mari Steinert, director of the department for pest control at FHI, told DinSide.

Aedesmygg:

  • Aedes is a genus of mosquitoes that has spread from tropical and subtropical regions and is now found in every part of the world except Antarctica. There are over 700 different species in the genus, but the most important are Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus.
  • Aedes mosquitoes are recognizable by their black and white markings on the body and/or legs. Unlike most other mosquitoes, they are diurnal and are most active right after sunrise and in the hours before sunset.
  • As with all mosquitoes, only the females suck blood, which they need to lay eggs. Otherwise, like the males, they live on flower nectar.
  • Several types of Aedes mosquitoes are known vectors for a variety of microbes, including yellow fever, dengue, chikungunya and zika viruses. These are transmitted by Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus.
