JINAN, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) – Chinese paleontologists have discovered the fossil of a new species of dinosaur in the city of Zhucheng, east China’s Shandong Province, local authorities said.
Experts have identified a fossil of a right ilium as that of an ankylosaur, and named the new species “Sinankylosaurus zhuchengensis,” according to the Zhucheng Dinosaur Research Center.
The discovery of the new species adds to the diversity of the Zhucheng dinosaur fauna and offers a better understanding of the life of dinosaurs, said Zhang Yanxia of the research center.
The findings were published by the China Geological Bulletin.
Zhucheng is home to one of the largest concentrations of dinosaur bones in the world, with a fossil burial area of 1,600 square kilometers. Chinese researchers found the first dinosaur fossil in Zhucheng in 1964 and have since discovered more than 10 species of dinosaur during excavations.
