Prosecutors in Germany, Italy and Hungary have raided the European offices of the Japanese brand Suzuki. According to Reuters, the inspections are related to suspicions of the use of special devices that reduce harmful emissions from diesel cars to the level allowed in the European Union. Both the Suzuki brand and the Stellantis concern and the Japanese spare parts manufacturer Marelli are in doubt.
It is suspected that such devices are installed on Suzuki cars with diesel engines, which were manufactured at the brand’s plant in Hungary. Stellantis supplies engines assembled in Italy there, and the Japanese company Marelli manufactures some of the components for them.
The prosecutor’s office reported a “large number of vehicles” allegedly equipped with fraudulent devices, but did not give an approximate number. According to Deutsche Welle, there are 22,000 SX4 and Vitara crossovers, which are manufactured in the company’s Hungarian plant.
Suzuki officials assured Reuters that the German headquarters fully “cooperates with the investigating authorities.” The same is stated by the other two street companies, Stellantis and Marelli. For Stellantis, this is not the first diesel scandal: similar lawsuits have been filed against Fiat Chrysler (FCA) and France’s PSA, which are part of the group.
It will be recalled that the biggest such scandal broke out around the Volkswagen brand in 2015. As a result, the German concern was forced to withdraw for repair 11 million cars Volkswagen, Porsche, Audi and Seat with diesel engines. The total amount of losses from the fraud cost VW about 35 billion euros.
