New Dengue Vaccine Recommendations for Ages 6-45: Expert Says Two Doses Can Prevent Dengue Fever

Malang Posco Media – Professor Samsuridjal Djauzi, Professor of Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, stated that the dengue vaccine can be given by giving two doses, starting from the age of six years to 45 years as an effort to prevent dengue fever.

“This dengue vaccine is already in Indonesia, ready to be used, it is a live vaccine for use at ages 6 to 45 years,” he said at the launch of the 2023 Adult Immunization Schedule Recommendations from the Association of Indonesian Internal Medicine Specialists (PAPDI) in Jakarta, Monday (18 /2).

Samsuridjal explained that the interval between administering the first and second vaccines was three months. Furthermore, there is no need to give a repeat vaccine within four years because antibody levels are still high.

In the same context, Chair of the Adult Immunization Task Force of the Association of Indonesian Internal Medicine Specialists (PAPDI) Dr Dr Sukamto Koesnoe, SpPD-KAI, FINASIM, explained that the determination of the age limit of 45 years as the time period for administering the vaccine refers to the evaluation carried out by the Supervisory Agency Medicine and Food (POM).

“We are very orderly with recommendations or distribution permits from the POM Agency, so we are in-line with Government policy, in this case the POM Agency, so that the public is not confused,” he said.

Dengue vaccine is contraindicated in pregnant, breastfeeding women and groups with immunodeficiencies such as HIV as proven by immune disorders, congenital or acquired immunodeficiencies such as the use of high doses of steroids and immunotherapy.

Sukamto referred to a long-term study 4.5 years after vaccination, saying the dengue vaccine could prevent severity and hospitalization rates of up to 84 percent and overall protection against dengue fever with symptoms of up to 61 percent.

He, representing PAPDI, hopes that the recommendation for a new immunization schedule, one of which includes the dengue vaccine, can make more people aware of the importance of self-protection with vaccination.

“We invite the public to consult with their respective doctors to get protection with vaccination, especially with the current rainy season situation where dengue cases tend to increase, making dengue prevention even more important for the community,” he said.

Sukamto reminded everyone at risk of contracting dengue fever regardless of age, location of residence and lifestyle. Referring to the Ministry of Health, as many as 143,000 cases of dengue fever were recorded throughout 2022.

As many as 39 percent of that number are productive groups and adults from the age range of 15-44 years.

“Many people of productive age are affected, the trend of cases is increasing and we have implemented 3M, we are still trying to optimize supervision and guidance. “Then there is innovation to prevent dengue fever, namely vaccination,” said Sukamto’s message.ntr/mpm)
