New Delhi takes heavy measures because of enormous air pollution

Far-reaching measures have been taken in New Delhi to combat extreme air pollution. That’s always a problem, but it’s now reached the point where six of the 11 coal-fired power plants in the Indian capital’s vicinity have been shut down, as well as much of the construction. Transport of non-essential goods is also no longer allowed.

Schools and higher education institutions were already closed this week, but that has been extended indefinitely. Pupils and students receive online education again, just like in the lockdown because of corona. Half of government employees will have to work from home this week and companies are also being urgently advised to let half of their employees work from home. Older petrol and diesel cars are temporarily no longer allowed on the street.

Traffic, garbage and fireworks

New Delhi is one of the most polluted cities in the world and suffers from heavy smog every year at the beginning of winter. This is caused by emissions from the coal-fired power stations in and around the capital, exhaust gases and the large-scale burning of waste in the open air.

What also doesn’t help is Diwali, one of the most important Hindu festivals, which is celebrated in October or November. The celebration is accompanied by the setting off of large amounts of fireworks for days, despite a ban on them.

Children can’t go to school and hospitals are now busy:
