As reported AFP, Tuesday (19/9/2023), the murdered Sikh separatist leader was named Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was shot dead outside a Sikh temple on June 18, in the area of Surrey, a suburb of Vancouver where the majority of Sikh residents live in Canada. Nijjar has the status of a Canadian citizen.
The figure of Nijjar is known to support the Sikh Homeland in the form of an independent Khalistani state, and has been designated by India as a ‘terrorist’ since July 2020.
“The allegation of involvement of the Indian government in any act of violence in Canada is absurd and motivated,” the Indian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
This latest spat between New Delhi and Ottawa brought already tense relations between the two countries to a new low.
Canadian Prime Minister (PM) Justin Trudeau while addressing an emergency parliamentary meeting on Monday (18/9) revealed that the government was investigating ‘credible allegations’ linking Indian government agents to Nijjar’s murder in British Columbia.
Trudeau insisted that the involvement of foreign governments in the killing of Canadian citizens was an ‘unacceptable violation of sovereignty’.
