For a few days there have been rumors about the possibility of extending the discount on petrol, diesel and LPG prices again, thanks to the cut in excise duties launched last March and, at the moment, extended until 2 May. The extension allowed us to still benefit from the reduction in fuel prices. What will happen now?

It seems that in the next few days a new package of measures may be launched, which also includes within it the cut in excise duties for another two months. In short, at the moment we know that the intentions of the government are these, there is still nothing official, but the will to extend the discount on fuel prices is there. Also because the Italians have suffered very high increases, which have weighed heavily on the pockets of families. Gasoline had arrived at prices never seen before, and for this reason the Executive had to intervene with the decision to cut excise duties, to bring affordable fuel costs back to under two euros per liter.
The new measures on fuel prices
At the moment we don’t have any official information yet. We therefore do not know when and how the new extension to the cut in excise duties will arrive. It could be a new measure that will be included by the Government in the new “Energy decree”, or an ad hoc inter-ministerial measure could also be launched. Nothing is certain yet, it is true, but by now we are almost certain that the providential cut in excise duties on the consumer price of gasoline and diesel will be extended again. Citizens will therefore benefit from “subsidized” prices at the pump for another two months.
Cut of excise duties: the decision of the Government
What are we talking about in particular? The measure was introduced in late March, to be in effect initially until April 21, 2022. An expected cut of 25 cents (+ VAT) on the cost petrol and diesel. This decision is then has already been extended once, and in fact we had talked about it, until 2 May, thanks to the solution of the mobile excise duty mechanism. And now that the expiration date is getting closer and closer, it’s time to think about what to do. It therefore seems that the cut in excise duties will be extended until June 30th. We repeat it again: there is no official and certainty, but most likely as early as tomorrow, April 28, we will be able to know something about it. In fact, we await the OK from the Council of Ministers to the new package against the dear energy, another point on which the Italians are fighting.
What do we expect in the coming months
Although fuel prices will certainly remain higher than the optimal threshold and what we were used to before this heavy rise in 2022, pump prices will most likely remain in May and June as well. under two euros per liter. No bitter surprise therefore for Italian motorists, unless crude oil prices suddenly skyrocket, but we cannot predict this at the moment.
The price will therefore always fluctuate around 1.8 euros per liter for both petrol and diesel. Let’s not forget, however, that the price lists that are now applying the service stations in Italy, since last March 22, are obviously affected by this cut in excise duties, which discounts petrol and diesel by 30.5 cents and 10.5 cents for LPG. In the absence of this provision, prices would immediately jump over two euros per liter. We hope that the situation will change.
