new death record, Trump plans to quarantine New York

The United States has seen 453 deaths linked to the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours, authorities said. To stem the spread of Covid-19, President Trump has indicated that he is considering quarantining New York, the epicenter of the pandemic.

The coronavirus pandemic continues to progress in the United States, the country in the world with the highest number of officially reported cases. The North American country has hit a sad new one-day death record, according to the Johns Hopkins University count.

The United States has known, in the past 24 hours, 453 deaths linked to Covid-19, bringing the toll in the country to 1,891 deaths since the start of the pandemic. This is less than in Italy (10,023), Spain (5,812), China (3,299) or even France (2,317), according to the same count.

Johns Hopkins University counted 115,547 cases on Saturday at 6:55 p.m. GMT, or 21,309 new cases in one day (+ 23%), again a new record.

Towards a New York quarantine?

Now the epicenter of the pandemic in the United States, New York State, which President Donald Trump said on Saturday was considering quarantining, is by far the most affected, with more than 50,000 cases alone, while remaining evasive on the exact scope of this measure.

“Some would like (State of) New York to be placed in quarantine because it’s a hot spot,” Donald Trump said as he left the White House.

New York, New Jersey, maybe a couple of other places, parts of Connecticut, I’m thinking about it,” he added, as many jurists questioned the possibility even for the US president to impose such a measure.

“It would be for a short time,” he said, assuring that he had a very good dialogue with the governor of the State of New York, Andrew Cuomo.

Asked a few minutes later on this subject, the latter was however very surprised, affirming that the question had at no time been raised during his morning telephone exchange with the American president.

“I don’t even know what that means,” he said, not hiding his bewilderment.

Earlier today, the governor announced the postponement of the presidential primary in New York State from April 28 to June 23, as a precautionary measure in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.
