New Covid and Flu Vaccination Campaign for at-risk population in Spain

According to the Public Health Commission, in recent months a rebound in infections and hospitalizations caused by Covid-19 has been observed – both in Spain and internationally. This is probably due to the new Omicron subvariants, which are more contagious but less lethal.

Taking into account that the effectiveness due to vaccination and/or previous infection decreases over time, and that respiratory viruses usually cause more pathologies during the fall and winter, the government has advanced the new vaccination campaign against Covid and flu to the third week of El Repunte, September, and the month of October (the specific dates will be decided by each autonomous community). This seeks to prevent the situation from worsening among the at-risk population.

target group

The new vaccine is especially designed for the at-risk population. In accordance with the new Health recommendations, the current epidemiological scenario recommends the new autumn-winter dose to the following people:

People over 60 years of age (especially those over 80). At least three months must pass since the last dose or infection. Children under 60 years of age who are at risk (diabetes, morbid obesity, chronic diseases, cancer, celiac disease, dementia, Down syndrome, etc.). Pregnant women, or recently pregnant ( up to 6 months after childbirth). Inmates in nursing homes, regardless of the number of doses received or previous infections. At least 5 months must pass since the last dose of mRNA. Health and socio-health personnel in primary care, hospital centers or nursing homes or disability care, due to their greater exposure to the virus. Personnel who work in essential public services (in special security forces and bodies, firefighters and civil protection).

If I am not at risk, can I get vaccinated?

According to the Public Health Commission, taking into account the epidemiological situation and herd immunity, “vaccination against COVID-19 is not justified in people not included in the target groups described above.” Even so, any person who does not belong to a risk group and who requests it may receive a dose outside the campaign, after an individualized assessment.

In these cases, the interval with respect to the last dose received, or the last infection, must also be taken into account. It will take at least three months to receive the dose.
