New covered skate hall opened in Vienna-Floridsdorf

For around two years there was no covered skate hall in Vienna. After the skate park in Liesing was closed in 2022, skaters had to make do with outdoor skate spots – whether in scorching heat, pouring rain or snow and ice. The weather-related inconveniences are now over: since yesterday, October 25th, there has been a new skate hall. At Vohburggasse 2 in Floridsdorf.

Admittedly, the new hall is not really centrally located. “But we just found them here,” explains sports city councilor Peter Hacker (SPÖ). It wasn’t easy to find a hall that met the requirements. “Especially because a skate hall can’t have too many columns,” says Hacker.

S-Bahn station nearby

The current 1,500 square meter hall was finally found on the online platform “Willhaben”. Namely from the “Skateboard Club Vienna” association, which now also looks after the hall. “It’s a dream come true for us,” says Johannes Wimmeder from the Skateboard Club. And with regard to the location of the new hall: “People also came to Liesing and that wasn’t exactly central either. The kids are all mobile.” The location is finally well connected to the Strebersdorf S-Bahn station.

The hall is 1,500 square meters in size and offers space for 170 users at the same time

The opening times also leave nothing to be desired. The hall is available seven days a week in winter and four days a week in summer. You can then skate until 10 p.m. However, if you want to use the hall, you have to buy a ticket. Entry costs 2.50 euros for children and 3.50 euros for adults.

Wo? The skate hall is located at Vohburggasse 2

Who is allowed to use the hall? The hall can be used by everyone. Children from 6 years of age only with an adult, children from 10 years of age also without an adult.

When is it open?

  • Winter season (November to February):
    Monday to Friday 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m
Saturday, Sunday and public holidays 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m

How do I reach the skate hall by public transport? By train (e.g. S3 or S4) to Vienna Strebersdorf station, then take bus number 34a to Vohburggasse station

How much does entry cost?

  • Daily entry for children 2.5 euros; 3.5 euros for adults
  • There will also be season and annual tickets
  • You can test the hall for free on the weekend of October 26th and 27th, 2024

Is it possible to rent equipment on site? It is possible to rent skateboards, helmets, protective equipment and scooters on site.

In addition to open operations, skateboard and scooter courses will also be offered in the future. And Thursdays, it is explained, are “Flinta Day.” The hall should become a protected space for women, girls and queer people.

Youth work

But the new hall is not just about skating. “It is a sports offer with educational support,” says Vice Mayor and City Councilor for Education Christoph Wiederkehr (Neos). Six youth workers and five sports educators are employed in the hall. “It is easier to find access to children and young people through sport,” says Wiederkehr. In this way, the problems of skate hall users can be addressed in personal discussions. Workshops should also contribute to this.

Children aged 6 and over are allowed to skate with an adult, children aged 10 and over are allowed to skate unaccompanied

The costs for the hall are shared. While MA 51 (Sport Vienna) covers the hall equipment for around 749,000 euros, MA 13 (Education and Youth) finances the recurring costs with rent and personnel costs. In 2023 and 2024, a total of more than 1.1 million euros were spent on this. “This is tax money. But it’s a good investment,” says Sports City Councilor Peter Hacker.
