The coronavirus variant XEC has been spreading in Germany for several weeks – possibly faster than some other Sars-CoV-2 lines. This emerges from preliminary data from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), as the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced.

However, both the ECDC and the World Health Organization (WHO) continue to assess the risk to public health as low, according to the RKI. In other words: The variant does not usually cause particularly severe disease.

Epidemiologist: No specific symptoms

As of October 15, the proportion of the variant in all corona diseases was 27 percent, slightly lower than the previous week at 29 percent. XEC is considered a variant under observation by the EDCD.

According to WHO and ECDC, neither of these two variants causes particularly severe Covid disease.

The XEC variant also does not appear to be associated with any specific symptoms, as Hajo Zeeb from the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology (BIPS) explains. The Covid symptoms continue to be diverse.

I think it is extremely difficult to draw conclusions about the subline based on individual Covid complaints.

More respiratory infections than in previous years

The number of respiratory diseases in Germany was at a high in the second week of October compared to previous years. Based on the cases reported by people themselves via the online portal “GrippeWeb”, the RKI assumed 8,800 respiratory diseases per 100,000 inhabitants (ARE incidence). That corresponds to 7.4 million people based on the entire population.

For calendar week 41 – this year it ran from October 7th to 13th – this is the highest value since such surveys began in 2011. One in five respiratory illnesses was therefore caused by coronaviruses.
