New coronavirus detected in mink in Poland

Polish scientists today detected the first cases of the new coronavirus on mink, having examined 91 animals raised in captivity and confirmed the infection in eight of them.

“This is the first case of confirmed infection of animals in captivity with the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Poland,” said researchers at the Medical University of Gdansk who worked in cooperation with veterinarians.

Coronavirus cases were detected on a mink farm (or mink) in the region of Pomerania, in northern Poland.

The findings of the Polish scientists came two days after the French government ordered the slaughter of all mink in captivity after an analysis showed that a mutant version of the new coronavirus was circulating among the animals.

In Denmark, a mutation of the virus has been found in more than 200 people infected with mink, and the government has decided to slaughter 15 million animals.
