New Corona vaccine: Who is recommended to be vaccinated again

For a large part of society, the corona pandemic is now a grim part of the past. But the dynamics of the virus ensure that research into new, more up-to-date vaccines is still being carried out.

At the beginning of 2024, the infection process will be dominated mainly by the Corona variant KP.3 and its sub-variants. These in turn belong to the Omicron variant JN.1, which briefly caused a stir – due to its different nature compared to the original virus. The RKI recently reported a slight increase in this variant in the nationwide infection rate.

Corona vaccination is available in three doses

From August 12, the new BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine “Comirnaty JN.1” will be available, which is specifically tailored to the new variant.

As with the previous vaccinations, “Comirnaty JN.1” is available in three different doses. One can contains six doses, which are good for 12 hours after opening. Leftovers must be disposed of. Peter Sandmann, press spokesman for the pharmacies in Munich, confirmed to „BR24“that there will be no supply bottlenecks.

A distinction is made between infants, toddlers (6 months to 4 years), children aged five to eleven, and children aged twelve and over. The new vaccine can be used both as a basic vaccination and as a booster vaccination.

The RKI is currently reporting that the virus is usually mild, as a large part of society has already been vaccinated and/or has already had several infections. The new vaccination is therefore once again particularly recommended for older citizens and people with corresponding pre-existing conditions.

Doctors can place their orders with pharmacies until Tuesday, August 6, 2024. However, according to Peter Sandmann, demand has so far been rather low.
