New corona rules in Saxony: contact restrictions and firecrackers ban

Dresden – Saxony’s state government is reacting to the still tense situation in the Free State with new corona rules. The vaccination capacities are to be increased. With an incidence of 1081, Saxony is unfortunately still the hotspot in Germany, said Health Minister Petra Köpping (63, SPD) on Friday when the new Corona emergency ordinance was presented. It is valid from December 13th to January 9th.

Even if the numbers fell, the SPD politician emphasized: “Unfortunately, I cannot give the all-clear at this point. It remains a difficult situation.”

Contact restrictions: If everyone has been vaccinated or has recovered, up to 20 people can meet privately in Saxony. Children up to 16 do not count. As soon as an unvaccinated person is there, only one household and one other person are allowed to come together privately. That is a stricter regulation than agreed between the federal and state governments, said Köpping. The background is the particularly critical situation in Saxony.

New Year’s Eve: Public New Year’s Eve celebrations are not allowed this year. In addition, a general ban on fireworks will be issued in public in Saxony, said Köpping.

Gastronomy in hotspots: If the incidence of 1500 or more is reached on three days in a row in a district or one of the three large cities, the catering industry has to close there. It is hoped that this “hotspot rule” will not apply, said Köpping. There are currently six districts with an incidence of over 1000. The negative frontrunner on Friday was the district of Meißen with a value of 2517.
Universities: The standard period of study is being extended again to take pressure off the students. If necessary, they should be able to extend their studies by another semester – without incurring educational disadvantages, as Science Minister Sebastian Gemkow (CDU) announced.
They tried everything to make the winter semester largely normal. Nevertheless, digital teaching is increasingly needed again. “This goes hand in hand with additional burdens for the students.”

No tightening of the rules in Saxon schools and daycare centers

Schools and daycare centers: The operation in schools and daycare centers is to be continued with the previous protective measures. The Christmas holidays would not be extended and brought forward, the Ministry of Education announced on Friday.
The new ordinance for schools and day-care centers applies until January 9, 2022. Education Minister Christian Piwarz (46, CDU) stated: “The system that has been set up has so far proven its worth. We have to keep an eye on the infection process and readjust it if necessary.”
Vaccinations: The capacities of the state offers are to be further expanded from next week. The goal is for the vaccination teams to achieve 20,000 vaccinations per day, said Köpping.
According to the minister, 20 children’s clinics in Saxony will also be involved in child vaccinations in addition to paediatricians.
In addition, there should be “family vaccination Saturdays” on December 18 and January 8, as well as vaccination offers for families between the holidays. Booking options are currently being set up.
