The coronavirus turned New York into a ghost town. An eerie silence hangs over the Big Apple. The city that never sleeps has apparently come to a complete standstill. But behind the facades the catastrophe rages.
It’s war”
New York has developed into the epicenter of the pandemic in the USA in a very short time: More than 23,000 residents are infected with the corona virus, 365 have already died from it, more than in any other state. 8.4 million people live in quarantine on around 780 square kilometers.

Governor Andrew Cuomo speaks of “astronomical numbers” and they are growing every day. Just like being overwhelmed with the situation. Because while the city is apparently fallow, according to statements by the medical staff, there is “war” in the clinics. The completely overburdened hospitals are sinking into chaos – the most essential things are missing everywhere: ventilators, face masks, gowns, gloves – absolutely in short supply in the metropolis.
Clinic network before the collapse
“No place suffers more pain. No place needs urgent help, ”said Mayor Bill de Blasio. He reckons that more than half of New Yorkers will be infected in the end. Most would have only “mild” symptoms, but “we are going to lose some people”. April will be tough. May harder. “The world we knew is lost,” says de Blasio. How bad the situation is can be seen in the New York hospitals: Almost 3,000 corona patients are currently being cared for, and the number is increasing every hour. The more than 1,800 intensive care beds are almost exhausted. The largest clinic network in the USA is on the verge of collapse.

Mortuary crowded
The symbol for this are the white tents in front of the Bellevue Hospital in East Manhattan. The bodies of corona dead are to be temporarily laid out there. The reason: the city’s morgues are full. Bellevue Hospital is not far from Ground Zero. White tents were already standing here after September 11, 2001. More than 2,700 people died in the terrorist attacks in New York alone.
