New corona criteria? Incidence, hospitalization, intensive care beds

Dhe Association of Intensive Care Physicians Divi welcomes the inclusion of further parameters in the assessment of the pandemic situation announced by the Ministry of Health. Christian Karagiannidis, responsible for the Divi intensive care bed registry, told the FAZ: “For autumn we have to rely on a triad: the incidences continue to play an important role because they reflect the infection rate, the hospitalization rate shows us how many patients come to the hospital , and the intensive care bed occupancy, how many severe courses there are. ”Politicians from various parties had criticized rising incidences as not very meaningful, since less severe courses are to be expected due to the high vaccination rate among high-risk patients.

“The incidence value remains a determining factor,” said Karagiannidis. The aim of politics must be to avoid a surge, as it is currently experiencing Great Britain or the Netherlands. If the number of infections is extremely high, the proportion of severe courses also increases in the younger age groups, according to the doctor. “It is crucial that the mask and distance requirements remain in place,” said Karagiannidis. “If you omitted all of the measures, we would have to deal with a natural R-value of the delta variant of six with a rapid infection of all those who are not vaccinated.”

So far, however, Karagiannidis has assumed a slow but steady increase in numbers based on the Divi data. Unlike last autumn, in the case of the fourth wave in autumn, politicians will have a longer decision-making leeway of at least two to three weeks, according to Karagiannidis. Experts believe that there will be a fourth wave in autumn due to return trips and seasonal effects.

“It is a personal challenge for the hospitals”

Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) announced on Monday that the age, vaccination status and type of treatment of patients should be reported. “It is a personal challenge for the hospitals to keep track of the data,” said Karagiannidis, but referred to North Rhine-Westphalia, where the hospitalization rate, i.e. the number of all Covid patients in the hospital, has been held since last year in addition to the number of intensive care beds becomes. “It should be another impetus to digitize hospitals more. Up to now, it has had to be entered manually in many places how many Covid cases are on the ward. ”If patients could be tracked digitally, they only had to be entered into the system once, and then practically everything would happen automatically.

Karagiannidis sees the challenge for the hospitals in the autumn in separating the severe Covid courses from those asymptomatic ones who have been admitted because of a different diagnosis. As an example, he cites the child who broke their leg while jumping on the trampoline, but also had a positive corona result when they smeared.
