After those that were established in the spring and autumn, Northern Ireland will thus experience its third confinement.
The new restrictions will come into effect from December 26 and will be evaluated after four weeks, Deputy Prime Minister Michelle O’Neill said, stressing that the spread of the virus required “urgent intervention” .
Non-essential businesses will have to close, as will pubs and restaurants, which will however be able to sell to take away.
The first of six weeks of confinement will be even stricter, with a ban on all sporting events and shops closing before 8 p.m.
This new lockdown will come just after restrictions were eased across the UK around Christmas.
The capacity of Northern Irish hospitals has been exceeded by the number of coronavirus cases. With more than 66,000 dead, the United Kingdom is one of the countries in Europe hardest hit by the pandemic.
