New Contactless E-Channel Service for Foreign Domestic Helpers, Non-Local Students, and Foreign Workers

[Now News Channel]From Friday, the Immigration Department’s e-Channel service will be extended to foreign domestic helpers, non-local students and foreign workers, and it is estimated that 420,000 people will benefit.

The Immigration Department will launch a non-contact e-channel in 2021. Citizens only need to register to obtain a QR code and use facial recognition, and they can enter the country without showing their ID card or fingerprint authentication. According to the Immigration Department, 2.6 million citizens have registered so far.

Foreign domestic helpers, non-local students and imported laborers can use the contactless e-channel starting Friday, reducing the time for immigration procedures from 15 seconds to 7 seconds, benefiting an estimated 420,000 people.

Assistant Director of the Immigration Department (Information Technology) Ke Chongyu: “Every summer holiday is the peak period for immigration. The Immigration Department has always provided very effective, fast and convenient immigration services. With this new measure added this summer, I believe that all Hong Kong residents should enjoy faster and more convenient services when using the immigration services at various ports.”

The three types of people need to scan the QR code when going through the immigration formalities. The e-Channel will print an entry label with the conditions of stay and the expiry date. After taking out the label, the gate of the e-Channel will open and the whole procedure will be completed.

At present, there are more than 700 e-Channels at each control point, and the Immigration Department said that it will increase manpower in response to service demand.
