Work on the next big rail project is underway in eastern Frankfurt. Deutsche Bahn (DB) is renovating both the listed Deutschherrn bridge near the ECB and the adjacent Schlachthof bridge between the Main and Südbahnhof. Both buildings are over 100 years old and beyond repair. As the two bridges are of great importance not only for Frankfurt, but also for rail traffic throughout Germany due to their central location, the DB plans to build additional new structures next to the existing bridges ‘ already there. The existing bridges should remain operational until the new structures are completed. The common goal of all involved is to have as little impact as possible on rail traffic. Once the design and plan approval process is complete, work on the existing bridge structures is expected to begin in 2029.
To build that new section, which is about 1.2 kilometers long, the DB needs a logistics area nearby. The bridges are pre-assembled here and transported from there to their future locations. The Mainwasen on the banks of Main Sachsenhausen is the most suitable area for this. This in turn means that a new location must be found for the sports clubs that are currently based there. The city of Frankfurt am Main and the DB are in close contact on this. It is important to both partners that training and game activities can continue continuously and that the clubs are closely involved throughout the process.
As things stand, the goal is to move the sports facilities permanently to the nearby Kaiserlei, which will be financed and designed by the DB. The city of Frankfurt am Main and the DB have informed the club chairmen and trainers of the two affected sports clubs, SV 1894 Sachsenhausen eV and VfL Germania 1894 eV, and the local advisory board called e influence about the current status.
Mike Josef, mayor and head of the sports department of the city of Frankfurt am Main: “We have already provided funds for the renovation of the Mainwasen sports facilities and will implement the first steps on site. At the same time, we acknowledge the need for new construction. We know that the construction work on the Deutschherrn Bridge is affecting the clubs. It is particularly important for me as the head of the sports department to find a common solution for the clubs. It is necessary to ensure that a site is developed for the clubs that best suits their needs. To achieve this, the clubs are closely involved in the planning.”
Gerd-Dietrich Bolte, Head of Major Infrastructure Projects, DB InfraGO AG: “The Deutschherrnbrücke is an important link in the German railway network. It urgently needs to be renewed. At the same time, we cannot close this central rail route for several years without causing major impacts throughout the Frankfurt rail hub and beyond. So we have to build the new bridge parallel to the existing one. We are aware that with this construction work we have to make a big intervention in the daily life of people in the eastern part of Frankfurt, Niederrad and Sachsenhausen. We are much more grateful for the city’s support in finding a good solution that suits the sports clubs.”
“Maintaining and upgrading the rail infrastructure in Frankfurt is extremely important to us so that we can ensure that the city remains accessible in the future – for all citizens in Frankfurt and throughout the country, ” said Wolfgang Siefert, head of Frankfurt’s city transport department. “That’s why I’m happy that the project is moving forward. We’re supporting Deutsche Bahn in planning, building and maintaining modern rail infrastructure on the site until the Deutschlandtakt is brought in. Since 60 percent of long-distance trains in Germany travel through Frankfurt am Main.
In order to be able to carry out the necessary pre-construction work in advance, the sports fields should be moved well before the construction work begins. To ensure seamless training and game activity, the move should only be made once the new sports facilities have been built in the new location.
After the work is completed, the Mainwasen area will be returned to use by the city of Frankfurt. The city of Frankfurt and DB will work closely together to advance the planning and provide transparent information on the next steps.
