New charges against ex-fashion mogul Peter Nygard in Ontario

Peter Nygard was not present for the hearing on Wednesday afternoon. The 80-year-old’s absence has not been explained.

Crown prosecutor Neville Golwalla said only that the prisoner refused to come out of his cell to go to the videoconference room.

The justice of the peace in the Ontario Court of Justice suggested that the octogenarian may be ill.

Me Golwalla also neither specified nor listed the nature of the new charges Nygard faces.

Peter Nygard was already facing nine charges of sexual assault and forcible confinement, in Ontario, for acts that would date back to twenty years in his Toronto fashion studio.

The former businessman also faces justice in Quebec and the United States.

Peter Nygard will appear again on June 29 by videoconference from his Toronto prison.

Mr Nygard’s lawyer, Brian Greenspan, was represented at Wednesday’s hearing by his partner, Christopher Lutes.

A publication ban prevents us from saying more in this case, in particular about the two new complainants.

The identity of all alleged victims of the Manitoban is protected under this ban. Peter Nygard is further prohibited from contacting them, as per a court order.

Peter Nygard has been imprisoned at the Toronto South Detention Center since the end of October 2021.

He was previously detained in Manitoba on similar charges in California and New York State. He was transferred to Ontario at the request of the Toronto police.

In Ontario, a justice of the peace refused to release him on bail in January pending trial, but his reasons are subject to the same publication ban, as are the positions of the Crown and the defense on this subject.

A magistrate of the Court of Queen’s Bench in Manitoba had also refused to release him on bail before his transfer to Ontario.
