New chapter of Yemen war, explosion near Aden airport kills 12 civilians

ADEN – The war on Yaman enter a new phase. Now the attacks don’t only come from the led coalition forces Saudi Arabia , but also bombing action. An explosion occurred near the entrance to the international airport of Yemen’s southern port city of Aden.

This explosion killed at least 12 people. However, it is not clear whether the incident was an attack. An airport official said a small truck exploded at the gate outside the airport on Saturday (10/30/2021). Security sources said the vehicle was carrying petroleum products.

The explosion was strong and could be heard throughout the city. The windows of the residential areas around the banyan were broken. “At least 12 civilians were killed in an explosion in the vicinity of Aden airport and some were seriously injured,” said a senior security official who did not want to be named, as quoted by Al Jazeera, Sunday (31/10/2021).

The cause of the explosion is not yet known. Aden is the temporary home of Yemen’s internationally recognized government, as a Saudi-backed coalition has been battling the Iran-aligned Houthi group for more than six years.

However, tensions have also simmered for years within Aden itself between the government and southern separatists. The government and the Southern Transitional Council (STC) are nominal allies under the Saudi-led coalition.

Earlier this month a car bomb in Aden targeted a convoy carrying the city’s governor – an STC member – killing at least six people and wounding others. The governor of Aden survived the attack.

Instability in the south complicates UN-led peace efforts to end the war in Yemen, which has killed tens of thousands of people and left 80 percent of the population in need of aid. The United Nations has described the situation in Yemen as the world’s worst humanitarian disaster.

A number of countries have condemned the bombing, including Egypt and Jordan. “Egypt affirms its full solidarity and support for Yemen in its struggle to confront the hateful scourge of terrorism, and in its efforts to achieve security, stability and development,” the Egyptian foreign ministry said in a statement.

While the official spokesman for the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Haitham Abu Al-Ful, reiterated Jordan’s strong condemnation and condemnation of all terrorist acts and practices, expressing his deepest condolences to the families of the victims, wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
