New cases of monkeypox detected in Germany, Belgium and Australia

After the first report of monkeypox infection in Europe, more cases continue to emerge throughout the world, in countries like Australia, Belgium and Germany.

This Friday, the Australian authorities confirmed that they identified a case in a traveler who had recently returned from the UK, while they reported investigating Another possible case.

The Institute for Microbiology of the German Armed Forces in Munich detected the virus in the country for the first time. In addition, Belgium detected first two infections in different cities.

For his part, the French Ministry of Health reported a first suspected case; however, it has not yet confirmed if it is positive.

The first case of monkeypox was informed by the Health Security Agency of the United Kingdom (UKHSA) on May 7. This Friday reported 11 new infections.

The May 18, Portugal notified about five people confirmed with the virus and 20 suspected cases. On the same day, Spain also reported eight suspected cases. This Friday both reported nine and 14 new cases respectively.

Monkeypox is a rare viral infection similar to smallpox. which was eradicated in 1980. Although monkeypox is much milder than smallpox and Most infected people recover within a few weeks. on rare occasions it can be fatal (if it coexists with another bacterium). Symptoms include fever, headaches, and skin rashes that start on the face and spread to the rest of the body.

The virus does not spread easily between people, but transmission can occur through the ccontact with body fluids, articles such as bedding or clothing that has become contaminated with fluids or sores, or through respiratory droplets after prolonged face-to-face contact.

The first human cases of the disease were detected in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1970. According to the CDC, it resurfaced in Nigeria in 2017 after more than 40 years with no reported cases. Since then, there have been more than 450 infected in the country.
