new cases of avian flu detected in dead birds in Boulonnais

Cases of bird flu have been discovered on dead birds at Le Portel. The Pas-de-Calais prefecture has decided to extend the temporary control zone to five new municipalities.

The virus continues to spread. New cases of bird flu have been discovered in dead birds in Portel, Pas-de-Calais, the Pas-de-Calais prefecture announced on Wednesday.

Consequently, the prefect, Louis le Franc, decided to extend the temporary control zone to the communes of Boulogne-sur-Mer, Le Portel, Saint-Martin-Boulogne, Wimereux and Wimille. This discovery of new cases brings to forty the number of municipalities concerned by this decree, introduced since May 20 in the department.

Airon-Notre-Dame, AironSaint-Vaast, Berck, Camiers, Conchil-Le-Temple, Condette, Cucq, Dannes, Echinghen, EquihenPlage, Etaples, Frencq, Groffliers, Halinghen, Hesdigneul-les-Boulogne, Hesdin-l’Abbé, Isques, Le-Touquet-Paris-Plage, Lefaux, Marck, Merlimont, Nesles, Neufchâtel-Hardelot, Outreau, Oye_Plage, Rang-du-Fliers, Saint-Aubin, Saint-Etienne-Au-Mont, Saint-Josse, Saint- Leonard, Tubersent, Verlincthun, Verton, Waben and Widehem, Boulogne-sur-Mer, Le Portel, Saint-Martin-Boulogne, Wimereux and Wimille.

To limit the spread of the virus as much as possible, the prefectural decision imposes a series of obligations on the inhabitants and professionals of the municipalities concerned.

Within this perimeter, all poultry, including backyard poultry, and any other captive bird must be kept permanently inside the buildings or under a net.

“Do not approach, feed or handle wild birds”

On the other hand, “no live poultry and no captive bird must leave farms, commercial or non-commercial, specifies the prefect of Pas-de-Calais. Derogations will be possible, after agreement of the Departmental Directorate for the Protection of populations (DDPP), mainly in the context of a direct transfer to a slaughter establishment.”

The Pas-de-Calais prefecture also asks the public “not to approach, feed or handle wild birds to avoid any risk of spreading the virus”. Although bird flu is not transmissible to humans through the consumption of products, the latter may be a vector of contamination. However, this virus is particularly pathogenic for birds.

Measures “extended if necessary”

In the event of discovery of one or more dead birds, it is recommended to immediately contact the municipalities or the teams of firefighters.

Last week, Emmanuel Cayron, the chief of staff of the prefect, guest of Bonsoir Lille, announced that these measures extended over 21 days. “They will be extended if necessary and as much as necessary, he added. The goal is to limit the spread and protect farm animals.”
