Apart from the widely discussed problems with the 1.2 PureTech engine, Peugeot cars have far more serious problems with the 1.5 BlueHDi diesel. Damage to the camshaft chain often leads to an engine overhaul. This is what the French newspaper largus.fr claims, indicating the reasons.
Whether petrol or diesel, Peugeot’s small engines are problematic, especially the 1.5 diesels. Introduced in 2017 on the Peugeot 308 II Phase 2, the 1.5 BlueHDi (DV5) is already distinguished by injection problems and clogging of the AdBlue tank. But that’s not the worst thing about this bike.
The most serious problems leading to major repairs are seen in newer units meeting the Euro 6.3 (or Euro 6.D) standard, manufactured after December 31, 2019. The French publication refers to an internal technical note sent to Peugeot dealers .
Origin and symptoms
Damage to the camshaft chain. The defect on the 1.5 BlueHDi is in the camshaft drive chain, which loosens and then breaks. This serious defect can be identified by the owners according to two criteria. The first is a rattling noise coming from the gear mechanism due to slack in the camshaft drive chain. The second involves the failure of the engine to start due to an interruption of said circuit. In both cases, the problem is the chain that connects the two camshafts and, in particular, its wear in a short time.
What are the technical solutions?
More recently, Peugeot has made changes to this engine. Among them is installing an 8mm chain instead of the problematic 7mm. In addition, so-called blow-off valves of the new generation are now available. But in the absence of information, how do we know if the engine has been updated? If the camshaft housing has a protrusion and the number 98 305 804 80 engraved, it is the better unit. Conversely, if the reference number is 98 126 472 80 and the case has a flat shape, the engine is equipped with the problematic 7 mm chain.
The different types of intervention
1. If the valves are bent, the camshafts are damaged… but without damage to the combustion chambers and cylinder head, the following parts mainly need to be replaced: valves, springs, camshafts, chain tensioner, gear assembly, etc. no.
2. If there are no broken parts, but the valves do not seal properly and the combustion chamber is damaged, the entire engine must be replaced. Note that dealerships may receive new engines that are out of date due to lack of stock. If this is the case, they need to do an aftermarket retrofit.
3. If there are no broken parts, but the valves seal properly, replace all parts as in step 1, except the valves.
