New Car Registration Data: German Market Prefers Gasoline Engines and Crossovers, Volkswagen Dominates

New car registration data on the German market show that in September, buyers preferred cars equipped with gasoline engines, crossovers and Volkswagen vehicles.

In September, 224,502 passenger cars were registered in Europe’s largest car sales market, which is almost the same (-0.1%) as in September 2022.

The best increase among German brands was shown by Smart (+ 137.4%), Opel (+25.9%) and Mini (+12.5%), while Volkswagen has the largest market share with 18.7%.

Among the import brands, Jeep (96.7%) performed best in September, followed by Peugeot (+57.7%) and Suzuki (+50.6%), while the largest market share belongs to Škoda (5.7%).

Crossovers are still the most popular, as almost every third new car represents this segment (30.3%). The compact class follows with 16.1% and the small class with 13.4%.

31,714 new electric vehicles (BEVs) were registered, which is 28.6 percent less than last year in this month. A gradual decline in government premiums, combined with often long delivery times, appears to have played a role. BEV cars occupy 14.1% of the market share, cars with hybrid drive (?%), plug-in hybrids – 6.9%, diesels – 17.8%, and the most popular are cars with gasoline engines – 35.2%. A small number of natural gas and LPG vehicles are also registered, but their market share is small.

In the individual classification, the first place is occupied by the Volkswagen Golf (8,788 registrations), the second – the Volkswagen T-Roc (5,969), the third – the Volkswagen Tiguan (5,958). The fourth choice belongs to the Opel Corsa (5508), followed by the Volkswagen Passat (4671). An interesting situation has developed with the Passat, as 97% of buyers are corporate customers.

The best Tesla model in September was the Model Y, which ranks seventh behind the Fiat 500.
