“New Cancer Cases in Asturias 2022: Age, Sex and Type of Cancer Incidence”

A total of 7,688 new cases of cancer have been detected in the Principality of Asturias in 2022, of which 2,372, 30%, affect people between the ages of 40 and 65, according to data released by the Observatory of the Spanish Association Against Cancer. Cancer (AECC) on the occasion of International Labor Day.

Thus, the association, through its ‘Todos contra el cáncer’ initiative, wants to recall the importance of improving the care of patients and their families, both to cover their clinical and non-clinical needs, and to reduce the impact it causes at a global level. labor and economic, as reported by AECC sources in a statement.

INCIDENCE BY SEX, AGE RANGE AND TYPE OF CANCER

  • 1.127
of new diagnoses were cases of colorectal cancer

  • 57,8%
of the cases affected men, while the remaining 42.2% were women

  • 957
men were diagnosed last year with prostate cancer

  • affected Asturians between 40 and 65 years of age, which represents a total of 2
    372 personas

  • 881
women were diagnosed last year with breast cancer

  • of the detections affected people older than 75 years, with a total of 3
    001 cases

‘Todos contra el cáncer’ emphasizes the need to take into account the situation of socioeconomic vulnerability at the time of diagnosis, since people who suffer from it may be forced to leave their job, make a change in it or reduce the number of hours to attend medical consultations or treatments.

In addition, the repercussion on health generated by the disease prevents patients from continuing with their daily lives. The AECC has recalled that, as a consequence of job abandonment or adjustments in the same due to reductions in working hours, sick leave or incapacity for work, there is a reduction in patient income and a loss of productivity. But it also affects their closest caregivers, who are often forced to leave their job to care for them as well.

The ‘Todos contra el cáncer’ initiative promotes the involvement of companies in improving care for patients and their families. In this sense, there are various mechanisms and policies that can help mitigate the impact that this disease can have on the worker.

The AECC has explained that, as the socioeconomic and labor situation of workers diagnosed with cancer is affected, their economic dependence on third parties, such as family and friends, increases significantly in 20% of cases, being even higher in middle and lower classes, as stated in the report ‘Impact of cancer in Spain’, carried out by the Cancer Observatory of the Association.

57.8% are men

Of the 7,688 new diagnoses in Asturias, 4,447 affected men, representing 57.8% of the total, and 3,241 women, placing the female incidence at 42.2%. In part, the fact that the balance leans towards men is due to the fact that the three most diagnosed types of cancer were colorectal (1,127 cases), prostate (957) and breast (881), with prostate cancer being the second with higher incidence.

Regarding the incidence by age range, most of the detections that were made in 2022, 39%, affected people over 75 years of age, with a total of 3,001 cases compared to the 2,372 that correspond to adults between 40 and 65 years.

Data from the Observatory of the Spanish Association Against Cancer also reveal a slight increase in diagnoses last year compared to 2021. Specifically, 64 more cases were detected.
