New Camp for Russian Prisoners of War in Ukraine: Conditions, Updates, and International Standards

A new camp for Russian prisoners of war will soon be opened in Ukraine, reported the Ukrainian state project of the Coordination Staff on Prisoner of War Issues “I want to live”, quoted by News.bg.

The project explains the increase in the number of Russian prisoners of war with the situation at the front, the decrease in the motivation of Russian soldiers and the refusal of the Russian side to exchange prisoners.

It was launched on September 19 last year, two days after Russia’s partial mobilization was announced, and deals with Russian soldiers surrendering with their units or individually.

The project ensures that conditions in the new camp, which in accordance with the Geneva Convention is located deep in the rear, will meet all international standards in the same way as in the already operational Zapad-1 camp, which opened its doors in May 2022.

“The Russian prisoners will be provided with medical care, three meals a day, connections with relatives, as well as constant access to representatives of the International Red Cross,” the project’s statement added.

The Ukrainian authorities do not disclose information on exactly how many camps for Russian prisoners of war there are in the country and how many people are there.
