The union bottles of the AOC will be renewed. The current “Nîmoise” will therefore disappear, 30 years after it was put on the market.
Yes, the bottle does matter: it’s a promise. So the AOC costières-de-nîmes winegrowers’ union renews its union bottle. Goodbye the current “Nîmoise”, present on the market for 30 years (although slightly revised and corrected five years ago) and welcome to not one, but two new models.
“Upgrade”
“We work a lot on the rise of the appellation and the objective is to support this work, to promote it as well as possible”, explains union director Magali Jelila.
The first bottle, called “statutory”, in the “cinnamon” hue (a little darker than the old one, “dead leaf”), is intended for red and white wines. It is heavier, 630 g against 460 g previously: a more solid container which enhances the content, in the mind of the consumer in particular. “It is a bottle designed more for top-of-the-range AOC wines, continues the one who has been piloting the case for several months. Thanks to it, we match the product with its bottle. “
Intended for rosé wines, the second bottle, called “innovative”, wants to be more “festive and trendy”, with its rounded curves and its crocodile-style stitching. Both offer the same sizes, in height and diameter at the shoulder, for logistical facilities.
On the shoulder, both display in a more marked and larger way the emblem of the city of Nîmes, palm tree and crocodile redesigned by Starck. The town hall recently renewed the free authorization for its use by the AOC. “We are very proud of it, because Nîmes is the capital of Costières, launches Magali Jelila. Each bottle is an ambassador of the city, especially since we export a lot … “
They are ready for the 2020 vintage
By the way, what is a union bottle? The term means that the 78 estates and 11 cooperative cellars of the appellation are not obliged to use it but, on the other hand, that it can only contain AOC costières-de-nîmes wine.
Winner of the call for tenders at the end of May 2020, the French company Verallia is the exclusive manufacturer of these new bottlenecks and will distribute them to producers, alongside three other approved distributors, from the month next. In time for the 2020 vintage, then. Indicative prices, for winegrowers: € 0.35 and € 0.38 per bottle (if purchased by 1,000).
Out of 25 million bottles of curbs sold per year (50% in red, 43% in rosé and 7% in white), so far, six or seven million are of the “union” model. “We hope that this proportion will grow, slip the director, that the winegrowers will take more of these new bottles. “
Which should not brighten up tables for the next 30 years … “Now things are moving fast and the packaging has a much shorter shelf life than in the past.”
