The Belgian government has agreed to a new communication system for politicians. This is a secure system with components designed in Belgium where the data is stored for a long time. The system is used by ministers, but also by civil servants and diplomats.
Minister of Justice Paul van Tigchelt says to the Belga news agency that the Belgian government has now put the system into use. It’s about it Belgian Secure Communicationssystem, which was already tendered in 2021. This replaces the Belgian Intelligence Network Information Infrastructure, or Binii, which has been in use since 2007 and was developed by Defense. That platform is now said to be outdated, after which BSC was contracted as a replacement.
BSC consists of several components. This includes a closed network for smartphones and laptops, a communications application and a network of ‘secret locations’ where state secret network traffic and video conferences are processed. They are located in Belgium and all components are developed in Belgium.
The system is used by politicians. This has been happening since January, when Prime Minister De Croo was on a state visit to China. Civil servants and diplomats will also use the network.
