New barrage of Israeli bombings in Gaza

Gaza Strip. Israel bombed the Gaza Strip again this Thursday, in its war against Hamas, in a context of fear that a possible Israeli response to Iran’s attack will worsen the conflict in the region.

The European Union, which called on “all parties to exercise maximum restraint,” on Wednesday imposed new sanctions against Hamas ally Iran and Israel.

The sanctions target especially the manufacturers of drones and missiles, the main weapons in the Iranian attack last weekend.

Witnesses reported new Israeli bombings at night in Gaza, where there have already been 33,899 deaths since the beginning of the Israeli offensive more than six months ago, according to the Ministry of Health of that Palestinian territory, governed by Hamas.

The bombs fell in Khan Yunis and Rafah, in the south of the strip, according to the territory’s civil defense.

The conflict began on October 7, with an incursion by Islamist militants who killed about 1,170 people in southern Israel and kidnapped about 250, according to an AFP count based on official Israeli data. Among the dead were more than 300 soldiers.

After an exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners during a week-long truce in late November, 129 people remain captive in Gaza, 34 of whom have died, according to Israeli authorities.
