Starting next year, the city’s Department of Transportation will prohibit the presence of street vendors on the sidewalks and bicycle lanes of the city’s bridges, including the Brooklyn Bridge, the Department of Transportation reported Friday.
Sellers have until Tuesday, January 2 to leave and enforcement will begin on Wednesday, January 3.
The new rule, which prohibits vending on pedestrian sidewalks and bicycle lanes on bridges and bridge approaches, will affect all crossings in the Big Apple, but was designed specifically for the Brooklyn Bridge.

“The Brooklyn Bridge has been called America’s Eiffel Tower, and these rules will ensure that millions of New Yorkers and visitors can enjoy it safely,” said DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodríguez.
Pedestrian traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge has increased and become more “challenging,” the commissioner added.
Last fall, on an average weekend, 17,000 pedestrians crossed the bridge. This fall, that number jumped to 34,000 pedestrians, Rodriguez said.
The department has begun communicating with vendors and will continue to do so through the weekend, he added. Provider information brochures are available in multiple languages and include different areas to relocate.
“It is about creating opportunities for sellers to relocate to other areas,†RodrÃguez said.
“And everyone knows that [el] “The Brooklyn Bridge does not offer enough space for pedestrians, for cyclists, for millions of visitors and also for all the setup we have seen there,” the commissioner added.
