The NPO, RTL and Talpa are satisfied with the new NMO Viewing Survey, the news agency reports ANP. Since the end of August, viewing figures for TV programs are no longer available the day after a broadcast, but only a week later.

By sharing the viewing figures only a week later, it can also be reported how many people have rewatched a broadcast. The new method was a request from the channels.

A spokesperson for the NPO says that the broadcaster is satisfied with the new audience survey “and the new insights it brings”.

“If viewing figures are published a day after broadcast, the focus continues to be on live viewing behavior and an incomplete picture of content viewing is created,” the spokesperson explains. “The figures actually become more relevant and important by publishing them a little later.”

‘New audience research provides a more realistic reflection’

RTL agrees. According to the channel, it is “only the first step in the transformation to a future-proof measuring method”. “In the second and third phases, online viewing behavior will be taken into account and the viewer panel will be expanded even further,” a spokesperson explains.

According to RTL, these are “necessary steps to provide a relevant and reliable picture of the viewing figures in these times”.

As far as Talpa is concerned, the new viewing research creates “a more realistic reflection of actual viewing behavior”. A spokesperson reports that Talpa is looking forward to the second and third phases of the investigation. “The quality of the research will therefore only increase and contribute to an even better picture of the changing viewing behavior of consumers.”

No penalty for sharing linear viewing figures

Although the viewing figures are no longer available to the general public a day later, they are available to TV providers themselves. Ratings expert and former SBS director Tina Nijkamp still shares “highlights” of the linear viewing figures every day.

She had a conversation about this with NMO. Nijkamp will not be imposed a sanction for sharing the viewing figures.
