crime
A new attack was probably foiled in the Antwerp sub-municipality of Borgerhout on Wednesday evening. The police found, among other things, fireworks in an abandoned bag. Two suspects were arrested and a Dutch car was towed.
The events in the immediate vicinity of Kortrijkstraat and Bijlstraat in Borgerhout took place just after 10 p.m. Local residents noticed a suspicious man in the street. When he realized he was being watched, the man fled. He left a bag on the street.
The Antwerp police set up a perimeter on the corner of both streets. “Demining service Dovo and the forensic lab arrived on the scene and took the suspicious package for further investigation,” said spokesperson Willem Migom of the Antwerp police.
The bag contained fireworks and gasoline, the materials that had been used several times in recent days to commit attacks. On Monday night, similar fireworks bombs exploded in Borgerhout, Boom and Merksem. On Tuesday night, a fireworks bomb also exploded at the parental home of drug criminal Omar G. in Merksem.
Dutch license plates
It currently appears that a new attack in the Borgerhout area has been foiled. The Antwerp police were immediately able to arrest two suspects on Wednesday evening. Three streets away, the police also had a car with Dutch license plates towed.
It is not yet entirely clear which target the suspects had in mind this time. The police have started an investigation into the precise context and circumstances. Just after midnight, the area around Kortrijkstraat was reopened.
