New “atmospheric river” gives danger warnings in northern Norway – VG

This weekend, a line will be drawn between the weather in the north and south in this country. Heavy rainfall, mild weather and wind are expected in Nordland and Troms, while high pressure is expected in the south.

Published:

– An atmospheric river is on its way with a lot of hot and humid air. It is expected to hit the north of Nordland and Troms on Friday, says state meteorologist Marit Berger to NTB.

The weather phenomenon is a long and narrow zone with water vapor transport, where the water vapor originates in tropical areas, according to Meteorological Institute.

– Most will come “ready-made”, at least in the lowlands, but something can also eventually turn into snow, she says.

The weather system is remnants of the winter storm that first formed over the United States and Canada, and which will pass through Iceland on its way to our northern coast.

Danger warnings are coming

It is a bit early to say exactly how much rain the northerners have to prepare for, but Berger asks people to follow the warnings from Yr and NVE.

– This smells of danger warnings to some degree. Now it seems that it can be up to 150 millimeters in a couple of days, but this can change. Combined with wind, it will also be able to affect the risk of landslides, she says.

The horseshoe pushes itself forward between old leaves in the March sun.

Quite right – on Wednesday afternoon there was a yellow warning of a lot of precipitation in the north of Nordland and Troms this weekend.

The danger of avalanches on Svalbard is already at a red level due to wet jib snow. This week it was set heat record for March in Hopen (3.9 degrees) and Ny Ålesund (5.5), but next week it will be much colder again. Thus, the snow can also settle better and the risk of landslides decreases.

In northern Norway, the weather will also calm down for the week, but it will still be gray. Slightly colder weather will provide snow instead of rain, but in the form of showers.

Just a little rain in the south

Eastern Norway had a very dry start in March, and there has not been much rain in the west either. In recent days, a number of grass and heather fires have flared up, and the danger is not over.

But now there is some rain on the way which can moisten the vegetation somewhat. Østafjells will rain on Thursday, while it will be Friday in Western Norway.

– In Rogaland, there is less rain waiting than further north in Western Norway, says Berger.

Thus, there is probably still every reason to be careful about lighting fires or engaging in arson.

After the rain, the dry weather will continue, also beyond next week, but it will probably be a little more cloudy weather, says Berger.

In Central Norway, the weather is about the same as in the rest of southern Norway – rain towards the weekend and later stays. Farthest north in Trøndelag, people will notice the type of weather that accompanies the atmospheric river in northern Norway – mild with rain and wind.

Do not put the skis away

For those who dream of ski Easter, there is hope:

– It will still be freezing at night in southern Norway, so it is good considering the snow, says Berger.

In Vestfold and Telemark, a danger warning has been issued for a lot of snow in areas higher than 200 meters above sea level. The snowfall can provide difficult driving conditions and the possibility of column driving in the mountains. Also in Oslo, Akershus, Buskerud and Agder, snow was reported in the height on Thursday

Nevertheless, it is the high pressure that will dominate in southern Norway from the weekend. Warm hours of sunshine a day will attract more horseshoes at the edges of the ditch, where the first ones are already yellow and nice.
