That is only a small share of the more than 2.8 million homes that may contain asbestos. In 70 to 90 percent of cases you run the risk of actually encountering asbestos, because our Flemish buildings contain no less than 2.3 million tons of asbestos-containing materials,” explains spokesperson Jan Verheyen.
An asbestos certificate test informs the owner, as well as a contractor, about where asbestos is present in a building and how it can be safely removed or managed. In addition, a contractor must have an asbestos inventory available for the works. Anyone who wants to apply for a demolition and reconstruction premium in 2024 must also be able to submit an asbestos certificate test.
