Big Book Thursday focuses on attractive and high-quality new material from leading Czech book publishers. This year will be the twenty-fifth. It offers 15 latest works at the same time by popular domestic and foreign authors.
A collection of new books across literary genres will hit bookstore shelves on Thursday, October 17. We present the expected ones in more detail:
1. Evžen Boček: Aristocrat in Czechoslovakia
A book by the writer and castle Evžen Boček about what happened to the noble Maria III. Kostková and her family sold more than half a million copies. In the novel Aristokratka v Czechoslovakia, Boček returns to 1983 – he is ahead of the whole series in time. The fifth book about the Kostka castle takes place in a socialist setting, and there the readers will meet the three people of the castle again – Mrs. Ticha, the castle’s Josef and Pavel Krása, as well as other characters.
2. Jaroslav Rudiš: Christmas in Prague
Rudiš’s Christmas in Prague is a tribute not only to the Czech capital and its history, but especially to people who sometimes feel alone in their lives. The book begins when the writer arrived by train from Berlin to Prague Central Station. On Christmas Day, he goes into town alone and meets other people along the way. The publication was accompanied by special illustrations by Rudiš’s friend and partner from the Kafka Band, Jaromír 99. So, twenty years after the publication of Alois Nebel’s comic, the two of them meet again in one book.
3. Jozef Karika: Black Year
The new work of the author Jozef Karika takes place in the wild 90s. It tells the stories of a mafia boss, a drug dealer, a corrupt official and two petty criminals. They are all experiencing a dark year, which could easily be their last. They had a desire for a better life, victory and wealth, but all they got was violence, death and darkness.
4. Renata Kalenská: Frozen souls
In the book Frozen Souls, Renata Kalenská discovers the stories of women and men who were victims of sexual violence in powerful personal interviews. Psychologist Yvonna Lucká completes the mosaic of very open statements about the victims. The book shows what the daily path to recovery looks like for each of them and how society treats them.
5. Municipal Miloš: Dr. Alz
The author of the books Sedmikosteli, Praga Piccola and Lord Mord Miloš Urban comes with a new novel Dr. Alz. Its main character is retired Gustav Molitor, a former publishing editor who is informed by his doctor about his advanced progressive dementia. Gustav decides to write down everything he still remembers. He then discovers with surprise how much humor can be hidden in shameful and sad memories.
