New Aquitaine purchases fifteen new regional trains

the Nouvelle-Aquitaine TER has been recording significant traffic growth for many years, with a peak of more than 23% between 2016 and 2019.

Despite the changes to the transport offer implemented by the Region starting from 2019 to optimize traffic and better respond to users, since the beginning of the 2022 school year many trains have been overloaded.

66,000 trips per day

With more than 700 circulations and 66,000 trips per day distributed over more than 3,400 kilometers of lines and 320 stopping points, the current 195 TER trains will not be sufficient to guarantee a quality service and respond to the increase in traffic over a two-three period years.

Given the train construction times, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region therefore anticipated the development of the rolling stock fleet by purchasing fifteen TER trains: eleven Régiolis and four Régio2N trains.

“These acquisitions represent an amount of 160.3 million euros, spread over five years, explains Renaud Lagrave, vice president of the regional council in charge of mobility. A 50% participation by Bordeaux Métropole is envisaged for the trains that will be used under the RER Métropolitain through a specific agreement. The Region will own the trains as soon as they are delivered, which will take place in 2025 and 2026″.

Respect the environment. The Régio2N trains are 100% electric (catenary) and the Régiolis are dual-mode electric-thermal, with possible adaptation to biofuel and hybridisation.

Rowing for everyone

To have this new equipment as soon as possible and to take advantage of the advantageous economic conditions negotiated by the French Regions in the early 2010s during the co-design of this equipment between the manufacturers, the SNCF and the Regions, the SNCF framework contracts will be used by stipulating two financing agreements.

The deployment of these trains will provide 3,612 additional seats.
