Traditionally, Apple products are not the easiest to disassemble and repair, but the Apple TV line has always emerged as an exception to this rule. Specialized in opening devices and separating their parts, iFixit made an investigation of the 4K 2021 model and had very positive results – but that accompany an important one.
Among the company’s findings is the fact that this is the first model to have a fan to cool its internal components. This can be explained by the presence of the A12 Bionic chip, which, in addition to producing content in 4K resolution at up to 60 frames per second, can also be used to generate very heavy game graphics.
Another discovery is the fact that the device’s case is transparent to infrared rays, which facilitates the use of its controls. The Apple TV 4K 2021 turned out to be relatively uncomplicated to open, as the company uses standardized screws and modular parts that fit together easily.
Siri Remote presents a repair challenge
The really challenging part is the new Siri Remote, whose refurbished design makes it difficult to access its interior. The lower part, which opened two obvious screws, does not have many maintenance options, and the process of removing the buttons is delicate and challenging – completed, it reveals 3 more screws that can be removed.
After that part of the process, iFixit claims that removing the logic board and the rest of the components is relatively uncomplicated. Although the drums used by Apple glued to the device using glue, it can be unscrewed with little force, but the fact that it comes soldered to the cabo Lightning should make replacement difficult.
At the end of its analysis, the site gave the grade 8 out of 10 for the Apple TV 4K thanks to its simple construction and the use of ordinary screws. However, Siri Remote did not do very well, getting only a score of 2 out of 10 – in other words, those who damage the product will have more luck acquiring another unit than seeking assistance capable of repairing it.
