New App Download Feature Bypassing App Store to Launch in EU Before March, Apple to Charge 27% Commission

Journalists from The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) have learned details of the app download feature that bypasses the App Store, which will appear in the European Union (EU) before March.

This is reported on the publication’s website. Sources said Apple will continue to charge fees for in-app payments, even if they were not downloaded through the App Store. However, it is unknown how the company will control this process. The commission amount will be 27 percent – for comparison, by default the IT giant takes 30 percent from developers of programs and services.

It is clarified that the feature of unverified downloading of applications on iPhone and other gadgets will appear no later than March 7 – on this day the Digital Markets Act (DMA) will come into force. Insiders said that Apple had been studying the issue for more than a year—corporation executives hoped to somehow bypass DMA.

WSJ journalists found that many companies are already ready to adapt their applications to the new rules. Thus, Spotify, Microsoft and Meta (recognized as extremist in Russia and banned) have prepared their services.

At the end of January, the European Commission (EC) spoke about Apple’s proposal to add third-party payment systems to the iPhone. Thus, the corporation approved the appearance of a replacement for Apple Pay on the brand’s smartphones.
