CAMPFIRE Symposium: New Ammonia Technologies Inspire Energy Transition and Create Security of Supply

On 21 October 2022, around 100 national and international players from the world of business, politics and research met for the CAMPFIRE Symposium 2022 at Ozeaneum Stralsund. Under the motto “Green ammonia technologies for energy security, climate protection and economic growth”, the companies presented their plans for new applications and implementation concepts. Ammonia is an ideal storage medium for hydrogen and can also be used as a fuel for ships and trains.

The current gas crisis demonstrates the urgency of an energy transition away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy. Ammonia will play a central role in this. Ammonia (NH3), known in the fertilizer industry, is increasingly used around the world as an energy source for green electricity and hydrogen. It allows the use of hydrogen in many areas, as ammonia can be stored and transported much more easily, efficiently and economically. As the second most produced chemical in the world, ammonia is already being shipped in large quantities to the world’s oceans and transported to customers on land via pipelines, railways and trucks. Green ammonia produced from renewable energies is therefore increasingly seen as a turning point in the energy transition and the key to security of supply.

CAMPFIRE symposium on the commercialization of ammonia energy technologies

This year’s CAMPFIRE alliance symposium focused on the global enterprise implementation of ammonia technologies and emerging new hydrogen value chains. CAMPFIRE is coordinated by the Leibniz Institute for Plasma Research and Technology eV in Greifswald. Together with more than 70 partners, the alliance is developing new technologies for the production and import of green ammonia and its use as an energy and fuel reserve. At the initiative of CAMPFIRE, regional, national and international partners met in Stralsund to exchange views on global developments in the ammonia sector of the new energy sector. The focus was on presentations from well-known and market-leading companies such as Thyssenkrupp, Solarlite, Maersk Zero Carbon Shipping, Hereaus Germany, YARA Clean Ammonia and the Ammonia Energy Association. The lectures and discussions covered the technologies for the production and transport of ammonia, its conversion to hydrogen and its use as a fuel on board ships. The highlights were the presentation of the Finnish Green Ammonnia “Green NortH2 Energy” project and the “Daure Geen Hydrogen” project in Erongo, Namibia. Senco Hydrogen Capital made an important contribution to the growth of the hydrogen market from an investor’s point of view to the participants.

Green ammonia as an economic engine for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

Jens Wartmann, head of strategy and technology in the CAMFIRE alliance, explained to the participants the increase in green ammonia technologies from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The first spin-offs of the alliance with the startups Green Ammonia Power, AmmoPro and CAMPFIRE AG are planned. Jens Wartmann explains: “With the current rapid growth of the ammonia market, we expect our regional companies and their business partners to achieve technological leadership in a short period of time. Sustainable business models for ammonia technologies should be possible as early as 2025 “.

CAMPFIRE alliance spokesperson and coordinator Dr. Angela Kruth adds: “After a very dynamic phase of research and development of our technological solutions for the future ammonia energy system, we are now looking forward to realizing our business goals and to commercialize the region’s high-tech. In the future, our new start-ups will produce power-to-ammonia and ammonia-to-power technologies in association with regional companies and through partnerships with large industries and investors and export them throughout the world. The economic potential for the region is high and includes the sectors of plant construction, energy technology, energy trading, special machinery construction, shipbuilding and automation technology. ”

Visitors to the CAMPFIRE symposium were able to learn more about fuel cell systems, ammonia crackers and the key components of electrolysers and reactors for ammonia production at an on-site exhibition. Regional production companies Sunfire Fuel Cells GmbH and Gesmex Exchangers GmbH, as well as the planned spin-off “Plasmafilm” of the Leibniz Institute for Plasma Research and Technology, presented further solutions.

About FIRE

The federally funded CAMPFIRE alliance was founded in 2018 as part of the BMBF “WIR! – Change through innovation in the territory “. It provides a first spark for sustainable structural change in the Northeast region through the development of innovative pathways and the development of economic benefits for the small and medium-sized enterprises established here. More than 70 partners implement technologies for the production and import of green ammonia and its use as a fuel for navigation and energy storage. The development of CAMPFIRE technology is currently financed with around 55 million euros under the BMBF WIR! program, in the leading TransHyDE project in the BMBF “Green Hydrogen” ideas competition, in the FETProActiv of Horizon2020 and in the BMWK IGF AiF. In recent years, CAMPFIRE has created strong partnerships between regional small and medium-sized enterprises with large industries and financially sound scientific institutions, as well as international visibility for the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Uckermark in the field of ammonia and hydrogen.
