The Minister of Employment, Jean Boulet, agreed with the arguments of the Union of Agricultural Producers and the opposition parties.
He tabled an amendment to his bill on Wednesday prohibiting employers from employing a young person under the age of 14.
Agricultural businesses with fewer than ten employees will therefore be able to hire children aged 12 or 13 to perform “light manual work to harvest fruits or vegetables, take care of animals or prepare or maintain the soil”.
“It’s an extension of family life, and this child will have to be supervised by an adult,” said Minister Boulet.
It should be noted that under the legislation currently under consideration by the National Assembly, young Quebecers aged 14 to 16 will no longer be able to work more than 17 hours per week during the school year, including a maximum of 10 hours from Monday to Friday.
Babysitting, newspaper delivery, homework help, animation in a day camp or a sports club and work in a small family business were already among the exceptions provided for by the text. of law.
