LONDON – A new algorithm designed using artificial intelligence (AI) technology has succeeded in detecting a dangerous asteroid measuring 182 meters (m) after failing to be found by astronomers before.
As reported by Metro Sunday (6/8/2023), the skyscraper-sized asteroid is named 2022 GN1 and will make its closest approach at a distance of 7.2 million kilometers from Earth in September 2022.
It is close enough to Earth that it is considered a potentially hazardous asteroid (PHA) to the planet.
However, the space rock was not detected by astronomers around the world before, during, or after the event because it was hidden behind the light of the Milky Way’s stars.
The new algorithm, HelioLinc3D detected asteroid 2022 GN1 by analyzing data from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), a telescope designed to search for fast moving objects in the night sky.
The presence of an asteroid was successfully detected by the algorithm even though it was only visible for a short time.
The discovery of the asteroid 2022 GN1 is a reminder to humanity that there are still many PHAs that have not been detected by astronomers.
Currently, scientists know of only 2,350 PHAs, but it is estimated that there are more than 3,000 dangerous asteroids yet to be discovered.
