New Affordable Housing Project in Saint-Georges Supported by Provincial and Municipal Governments

A building with 41 affordable housing units will be built next year in Saint-Georges. It will be located at the corner of 120th Street and 2nd Avenue, the project being carried out by the Beauce Community Real Estate Company (SICB).

The building will have 19 one-bedroom apartments, 12 two-bedroom units and ten three-bedroom units. Ten of these apartments will be reserved for customers of the Maison de la famille Beauce-Etchemins and Au Bercail.

As part of the Quebec Affordable Housing Program (PHAQ), the provincial government will pay 41% of the bill totaling $17,246,874. The City of Saint-Georges will pay $2,829,933, or 17.5% of the total cost. The rest will be assumed by the occupants through a mortgage taken out.

“This is the SICB’s first major project. We hope it will lead to further construction in the area. There is currently no other model than that of private housing and HLM in Beauce. The SICB is keen to diversify this offering in order to facilitate access to housing,” says its president, Sarah Bellemare.

A first request for financial assistance, from the PHAQ, was refused in July 2022. Samuel Poulin, MP for Beauce-Sud, is happy to have worked on the change of direction of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MAMH ) in this file.

“This project has been desired for a long time by community organizations. Having quality housing is directly linked to our state of health. The land is already ready and we hope that construction will be concluded before the end of 2024,” mentioned Mr. Poulin during an official announcement on December 13.

Revitalize by supporting your neighbor

Last August, the City of Saint-Georges demolished the two buildings on the land at a cost of $290,000. One building formerly housed the offices of Radio Beauce and the second was partially destroyed by a fire in 2018. Both buildings were uninhabited.

“We didn’t know, at that time, what we would do with the land. The City of Saint-Georges is working to revitalize the downtown area. This construction will be positive for our community, especially with the surrounding organizations which will maintain the social safety net,” says the deputy mayor, Manon Bougie.

Sarah Rodrigue, general director of the Community Development Corporation (CDC) of Beauce-Etchemins, is also delighted with this announcement. “The rental vacancy rate is only 0.2%. The need for affordable housing is significant,” she concludes.
