More than one hundred low-income seniors benefited from accessing affordable housing in a brand new, modern building in the Bronx. According to authorities, this is an example of how to combat the shortage of homes with income that the neediest can afford.
“They did it thinking about us old people, so that we are comfortable,” says Doña Pilar de León Enrique.
The 71-year-old woman worked her entire adult life in the Bronx. Today, now retired, she is one of the beneficiaries of the NYC Housing Connect lottery.
It has a one-bedroom apartment with an equipped kitchen, a bathroom with grab bars in the shower.
The best of all, says Mrs. de León, is the rent that she can now pay.
Like her, hundreds of low-income seniors now live in the building at 2850 Webster Avenue. The 12-story property has 188 new, packaged apartments equipped with premium refrigerators and stoves.
Several authorities, the construction company and representatives of the Bronx Botanical Garden, owners of the land, and residents, inaugurated the building with music and even dancing.
Residents will have access to social services and in phase 2 a supermarket will be built and all seniors will be able to enter the Botanical Garden for free, which is literally in the courtyard of the building.
Lilian Rivera previously lived in a building where no one greeted her and she paid a lot. Now that has changed and she says she feels happy in her new home.
